Dentists use dental handpieces regularly pertaining to what he/she is performing. Handpieces are important tools in dentistry to maintain the smooth functioning of a practice. Therefore, a diligent maintenance protocol should be taken place to keep it working properly.

To keep your dental handpieces for the long term, follow the steps below on how to take care of them.

1. Clean the Handpiece. Flush water through the handpiece for 30 seconds and then use a long-handed brush (or a universal disinfectant wipe, wire, soft bristle brush) under running water. Hold it upright to remove excess water.

2. Dry the handpiece to prevent corrosion.

3. Lubricate the handpiece by using lubricating oil.

4. After lubricating, make sure to turn on the handpiece to distribute the oil evenly through the bearings and chuck mechanism.

5. Use alcohol and a Q-tip to remove excess oil and dirt from the fiber-optic surfaces.

6. Based on CDC guidelines, bagging handpieces in a sterilization pouch is essential to maintain sterility.

7. Lastly, put the sterilization pouch into the autoclave machine and follow the manufacturer’s guidelines. Make sure to leave the bagged handpiece in the autoclave until dry.
